What’s On Top? Hierarchy of Controls and our Dental Office

Course Description:

A necessary process of protecting the health and safety of the dental team is to control exposures to occupational hazards including disease-causing pathogens. The Covid pandemic increased our awareness of the critical importance of controlling infection transmission. Understanding and implementing control solutions in the most effective manner will lead to a safer work environment.

During this course, we will discuss infection control interventions using the Hierarchy of Control as our model.

Course Objectives:
  • Define and discuss exposure to occupational hazards within the dental office
  • Define and discuss the five levels within the Hierarchy of Control model
  • Define and discuss effective and efficient infection control practices for the dental office

Maryanne Ferree RDH, BS, PHDHP

Maryanne holds a Bachelor of Science with a focus in dental hygiene education from the College of General Studies at the University of Pittsburgh and maintains a license as a Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner. She has over 35 years of clinical experience. Maryanne is currently clinical faculty in the Department of Periodontics and Preventive Dentistry focusing her clinical teaching on Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation and is finishing her Public Health Master’s thesis on Infection Control in Dental Practices.
